In Hollywood, one good role can proper your entire career. But, there were a few artists that turned down the biggest roles in their entire career. The people replacing them are now the most prestigious actors in Hollywood and made enough buck that they probably don’t have to work anymore. I think it’s an understatement to say that these 15 actors regret their choice.
CHRISTOPHER WALKEN IN STAR WARS
George Lucas actually wanted Christopher Walken in the new Star Wars movie. But, he refused and Harrison Ford was offered the role.
JACK NICHOLSON IN GODFATHER
Everyone knows how great the Godfather was. The role was offered to many actors. Along with Nicholson, Robert Redford, Ryan O Neil and Dustin Hoffman were offered the role. But, they all rejected and Al Pacino was selected as the man for the job.
JULIA ROBERTS IN THE PROPOSAL
Julia’s career would’ve taken an extreme boost if she had agreed to work on The Proposal. Instead she refused and the role went to Sandra Bullock.
JOHN TRAVOLTA IN FOREST GUMP
Forrest Gump was a movie that every 80s and 90s kid has seen. Tom Hanks got an Oscar for his lead role in the movie while John Travolta passed on the role. He even admitted that he made a terrible mistake by passing on the role.
WILL SMITH IN THE MATRIX
Will Smith was soaring sky high because movies like Independence Day and Men In Black were offered to him. That’s why he rejected the Matrix to make Wild Wild West. Questionable decision to be honest.
SEAN CONNERY IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS
Another classic movie. Peter Jackson was offered the role of Gandalf because he wasn’t able to understand the role. Connery’s career started to stall and he accepted a role in The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. A movie that literally no one understood.
MATT DAMON IN STAR TREK
Matt Damon was contacted by the Director J. J. Abrams. as Captain Kirk. He probably regrets this everyday.
AL PACINO IN PRETTY WOMAN
Al Pacino was the director’s pick to be in the movie but he declined the offer. The movie would have certainly been elevated with him presence.
TOM SHELLECK IN INDIANA JONES
Shelleck decided to work on the role of Magnum P.I. instead. Good, because Jones wouldn’t have looked nice with a mustache.
ANGELINA JOLIE IN CHARLIE ANGELS
Angelina was offered the role of Alex Munday. While Angie isn’t someone that needed the role to propel her already illustrious career, it would have certainly been nice to say that she was Munday.
KATIE HOLMES IN BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn’t actually interested in the lead role and was auditioned as a cheerleader named Cordelia. However, Katie wanted to finish school so she refused the role and it was given to Sarah.
ANNE HATHAWAY IN SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
Anne refused because of legal issues, and they casted Jennifer Lawrence who won an Oscar for Best Actress. While Anne also won an Oscar the same year, it wasn’t as prestigious as being named the Best Actress.
EMILY BLUNT IN IRON MAN 2
Emily Blunt left Iron Man 2 because she was too busy shooting Gulliver’s Travels. She could’ve been the great Black Widow, but instead she worked in a movie that completely failed when it was released.
MOLLY RINGWALD IN PRETTY WOMAN
If skipping iconic roles was an art, Ringwald would be Picasso. She turned down the role that was handed to Julia Roberts. That’s not it, she also declined the chance to play Molly Jensen in Ghost. Both of which were incredible opportunities.
EMINEM AND MATT DAMON IN AVATAR
Both of these folks were offered major roles by Neil Blonkamp. Em left because the director wouldn’t film in Detroit. Matt Damon also dropped the role to Sam Worthington. Starring in that three hours movie would’ve been absolutely amazing for both of their careers.
