A Kat of a Tattoo artist

Katherine Von Drachenberg, better known as Kat Von D is best known for appearing on the TLC shows Miami Ink and LA Ink. She is also renowned for her ability to tattoo realistic portraits, and has several celebrity clients.

She was born on March 8, 1982 in Nuevo Leon, Mexico to Argentine parents of German and Italian descent. Her family moved to southern California, and Kat grew up there. Kat liked to draw as a child, and began piano lessons at age 6, and has been into music ever since. She dropped out of school when she was 14, and started giving people tattoos when she was 16. In the early 2000’s she was asked to work at a tattoo shop called Miami Ink in Miami, when one of the artists, Darren Brass couldn’t work due to a broken arm. She ended up becoming one of the stars of the TLC reality series chronocling the life of Miami Ink.

In 2004, she married Oliver Peck, but in 2007, they divorced. Around the same time of the divorce, Kat had a “falling out” with Ami James, lead artist of Miami Ink and she left Miami. She moved back to her childhood home od Los Angeles, and started her own shop. TLC also featured a reality series on her new shop High Voltage Tattoo, called LA Ink.

After moving back to LA and being single again, things really seemed to go well for Kat. She created the yearly festival known as Musink, which features famous tattoo artists and rock bands. She also set a Guiness World Record of giving 400 tats in a single day- most tattoos ever given in a 24 hour period. She also released a book called “High Voltage Tattoo” that shows some of her best artistic work.

Kat Von D has dated a lot since her divorce, including Alex Orbison a.k.a. Orbi and Nikki Sixx.
