A Mom That Never Gave Up
Katie Page was born in Alabama, although later she decided to move to Denver. There, she worked as an integrated services manager, where she oversaw different projects. But Katie struggled with her personal life at the same time.
Katie went through a rough divorce in 2014, which severely affected her. After much soul-searching, she realized she needed a change, but not just any change: she needed to turn her life around.
Katie’s Story
Katie felt that she wasn’t living the way she was meant to. “I remember looking in the mirror one day and sobbing at the woman I saw, and I knew I was not the woman my heart desired to be” she wrote on her blog.
At that moment, she was determined to change her life. Not only did she start to work at her current job, but decided to buy a house, all her herself. But, she felt she needed to change something else…
Finding Herself
Why would Katie buy a four-bedroom house all for herself? At the time, she wasn’t quite sure, but she knew in her heart that she was on the right path.
As she pieced her life together, she realized there was one more thing she was missing in order to be complete: motherhood.
A Milestone Long Overdue
During her marriage, Katie tried but failed to get pregnant. Fertility issues set her back on making her childhood dream come true. But now, she realized that fertility issues couldn’t stop her in her pursuit.
Shortly after moving to her new place, she received an email from her church, which was about foster care. When she read those words, something sparked inside of her, something that would change her forever.
The Biggest Decision Of Her Life
Although she knew what she wanted, becoming a foster mom wasn’t going to be easy. She asked her mother to help her out, and although she was initially shocked, she agreed to go with her to an interview.
“What I heard that evening about foster care gave me chills and scared me, but it also pulled at my heart in a way I couldn’t stop thinking about it”, she wrote on her blog. A year later, her life changed forever.
Life As A Foster Mom
By 2015, Katie was looking after her fourth foster kid. Up until then, she only fostered kids temporarily and, although it was very fulfilling, she knew she wanted to be more than a foster mom.
Katie let her caseworker know that she didn’t want to be a temporary guardian to a child anymore. She wanted to give a child a home for the rest of their life; she wanted to be a mother.
The Call That Changed Everything
Not long after she revealed her desire to adopt a child, Katie received a call from her caseworker. The call was about a baby boy who had been abandoned at the hospital. As the boy had no family, he was likely to be a foster-to-adopt situation.
The baby had drug exposure, but luckily didn’t show any signs of withdrawal, and would be ready to discharge the next day. Katie made the decision on the spot and told her caseworker that she wanted to adopt the baby.
The Beginning Of The Rest Of Her Life
The very next day, Katie rushed to the hospital to pick up the newborn. The baby was nameless, as his biological mother had abandoned him at the hospital. Katie decided to name the boy Grayson.
The first months weren’t easy, as Katie was also taking care of another foster baby at the same time. Luckily, she had her mother help her. However, she had another task at hand: finding information about Grayson’s parents.
No Luck
She posted ads in newspapers and talked to the hospital staff, but no one came forward. In a way, Katie was glad no one responded, as she could keep Grayson forever. It was still hard to think about what she would tell him when he grew up.
How would she explain to him that nobody came looking for him? That question kept her up for a long time. Despite those anxious feelings, Katie officially adopted Grayson when he was 11 months old.
Officially A Family
Raising Grayson was difficult, as he faced physical and mental challenges due to his exposure to drugs. Therefore, Katie decided to hold off bringing in any more foster kids.
That didn’t last for long, though. Just a few months later, Katie received another call from her caseworker that would turn her life upside down once more.
A Big Decision
Her caseworker told her that there was a four-day-old baby girl with drug exposure, just like Grayson. The baby needed to be placed with a foster parent immediately, and Katie had a huge decision to make.
Although she had her hands full with Grayson, the story of the girl called out to her. The baby had been exposed to drugs while in her mother’s womb, and she was at the same hospital as Grayson. This is why she decided to take her.
A Mom Once Again
That same day, Katie welcomed baby Hannah to her home. She felt overwhelmed but knew there was something special about the placement. She felt it was meant to be, but couldn’t figure out why.
When Katie looked at Hannah’s medical records, she discovered that she had the same level of drug exposure as Grayson, and also displayed matching conditions. But that didn’t end there.
An Incredible Coincidence
As Katie reviewed the bracelets on the baby, she noticed the first name of her biological mother’s name matched Greyson’s. Could they actually be related?
Katie decided to look into it and found out that the mother’s birth date was also the same as Greyson’s. There was an unbelievable connection between them.
An Amazing Discovery
Katie couldn’t believe her eyes. Was it really possible that the two babies had the same mother? She decided to investigate more before jumping to conclusions.
Katie contacted her caseworker, who gave her more information about the baby’s mother. Then, the caseworker arranged a meeting with the biological mom.
The Truth
Shortly after that, Katie’s caseworker called her, and told her that her suspicions were correct: Grayson and Hannah were related.
Katie cried as she found out the truth about the children. She believed it was a miracle, and it was no coincidence that she ended up with the two siblings.
Making It Official
Just to make sure, Grayson and Hannah underwent a DNA test, which confirmed that they were, in fact, brother and sister. That is when Katie knew she had to adopt Hannah.
“As soon as I started figuring out that she was his sibling, I said, ‘Absolutely, I’ll adopt her.’ Once I took in Grayson and I accepted being his mom, I accepted his family” she told Good Morning America. But the story didn’t end there.
Yet Another Twist
Later, Katie was told that her children had another sibling. Although she would be raising three babies on her own, Katie said yes right away. She hopes to make the adoption of the third child in 2019.
“I was a single woman in a four-bedroom house, and now every room in my house is full. It’s never dull. People ask me all the time, ‘How do you do it?’”. She added, “I never thought I’d have three babies, but God doesn’t give you more than you can handle”.
