Detoxification refers to the body’s process of eliminating harmful substances. It occurs when poisons are counteracted and gotten rid of through urine, stool, or sweat. However, oftentimes the body alone and its natural processes fail to completely get rid of the huge amounts of toxins that enter our systems through pollution and unhealthy lifestyle. When this is the case, we need to help our bodies’ natural cleansing solutions with a detox diet. This is simply a system of ingesting specific foods and drinks that bolster or promote the elimination of poisonous substances in the body.
Detoxification has numerous positive effects on our bodies. A bodily system unhampered by wastes and toxins will function the way it was meant to. Blood circulation would be normal. The lungs would be able to process oxygen efficiently. The excretory organs would not be clogged; and the body’s ability to absorb and use nutrients would be enhanced. The result would be more strength and vitality as well as diminished stress.
Furthermore, a detox or cleansing diet has the added benefit of helping us shed unwanted weight in a safe and healthy way. Since in a detox diet the primary sources of nourishment are vegetables, fruits, and water, we can quickly get rid of extra weight as well due to the reduction of calories, fat, salt, and sugar that we take into our system.
There are, however, a few things to keep in mind before trying out a detox diet. First, it is a very restrictive form of dieting and as such should only be used for a short period of time. Prolonged detoxification could lead to undernourishment, which itself could lead to various undesirable conditions. Particularly, a typical detox diet would restrict the amount of protein and carbohydrate intake. If this restriction is allowed for a prolonged period, loss of muscular tissue (not only unwanted fat) could occur. This causes a decrease in muscular energy and other possibly more serious problems.
In relation to this, it should be emphasized that a cleansing diet is not meant to be a long-term or in fact even a short-term weight management strategy. Individuals who attempt to lose weight quickly on a detox plan find that they just as quickly revert to their unhealthy eating habits and regain weight as soon as the cleansing diet is stopped. Weight management for the long term requires a combination of healthy regular eating habits and an effective exercise program. This is different from a special diet plan wherein the amount of nutrients is drastically reduced and substituted for the very specific purpose of cleaning the internal body. Also, heavy and regular exercise is not advisable while on a detox diet as it can reduce strength to a dangerously low level.
It is recommended to seek medical advice before undergoing a detoxification program to ensure safety and to get the most out of the detox diet plan.
