Review: Restaurant (Kalakkal Cafe, Chennai)
Here’s a novel cafe in Chennai which offers a menu in three formats: in large capitals, in pictures and in Braille! It hopes to make life easier for the differently-abled in Chennai….

This is a cafe with a difference: there are ramps to facilitate entry, wheelchair-friendly toilets, the cafe walls are tactile, the food is subsidized and pocket-friendly, it offers a disabled-friendly menu as well as eating aids and it is open only on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month!.

Yes, Kalakkal Cafe is indeed an unusual and experimental cafe and the first of its kind in the country! It is only open to the differently-abled and youngsters and is completely off-limits to helpers and parents. Finally, the differently-abled have found their own space….

The menu may be limited to barely a dozen dishes listed, but the Cafe hopes to open a whole new world of possibilities for the differently-abled in Chennai. It is the brainchild of Vidya Sagar, an NGO dedicated to working with children afflicted with cerebral palsy and neurological disabilities, with a long-term aim of integrating these differently-abled children socially and in the community..

Also on the cards is a dance floor and performances by live bands. It could well turn out to be the new hangout in town where the differently-abled befriend the non-disabled!.

Review: Restaurant in Chennai (Yoko Sizzlers) Remember ‘Touche’ in Mumbai, serving the best sizzlers in town? Then there was the off shoot ‘Kobe’ and yet another “sizzling” cousin ‘Yoko’….

‘Yoko’ decided to move South and has recently opened its doors to sizzling Chennai’s sizzler freaks….

Done up in true Japanese style cafe in Chennai, Yoko’s decor is a dramatic mix of black, red and beige. Steel based tables and chairs add a shimmer even as voluptuous sofas dominate one whole side of the restaurant. Once you’ve settled down comfortably, its time to scan the menu for the mind boggling and ‘sizzling’ choices on offer….

Nothing beats Yoko’s French fries, you just have to try them on a guilt-free day! Say ‘Yo!’ to skewers of chicken / prawn shashlik, mixed seafood grill, mutton chops, chicken sausage, chicken with asparagus sauce, pepper steak and fish satellite..

Veggie delights include paneer satellite, grilled mushrooms with cheese, shashlik and sizzlers..

Cool down after the ‘sizzling’ experience, with any flavour of your choice, from the delicious list of Yoko ice-creams, sundaes or cassata. Alternately you could end your meal with the light and fluffy caramel custard, done just right!
