Chutney’s Indian Restaurant in Houston, Texas

Chutney’s is an Indian restaurant located in the downtown area, and if you work in the area and you pass near it you will smell the strong odor coming from the kitchen at any given time, which make you hungry.  The restaurant is located at 1010 Lamar in between Main and Fannin close to the Houston Pavilions center and their hours of operations are from Monday through Friday for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (they offer a lunch buffet) and for dinner from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. while Saturday it remains open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The venue has a very nice ambiance with high ceilings and palm trees inside and it includes different Indian cuisines in the menu, which varies a little each day, from the Southern to the Northern ones. Parking can be a challenge, because of the location, however if you work around there for lunch is good, but for dinner you may have to drive around the block a few times, so parking gets a C.

For their lamb and goat dishes you can go with the lamb saag which are lamb chunks seasoned and prepared in a spinach sauce, or the goat curry, or even the lamb korma which is lamb served in a creamy cashew sauce for $13.95. However if you prefer chicken then go with the chicken Chettinadu which is deviled and comes with black peppercorn and tamarind sauce, or the chicken masala  which is a boneless chicken breast in a mild creamy tomato sauce for $13.45.

Nonetheless, they also offer vegetarian meals such as the saag panner which is creamy spinach cooked with paneer served with basmati rice for $10, or the bengan bhartha which is eggplant baked in oven and cooked in creamy spicy sauce, or the navaratan korma which is a mix of vegetables served in a mild, creamy cashew sauce, or even the chana masala which are chickpeas served in a sauce of tomatoes, onions and spices for $11.95.

The prices are a little high because the portions are not immense, but they still fill you up enough, so that gives the prices a B-, but the quality of the food is simply so good that you can overlook the price and the food gets an A and the service is average, it is a little slow at lunch unless you opt for the buffet, so it gets a B+.
