Most times when you think of pizza, you think of a pizza crust, a tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and maybe some meat or vegetables.
But, the possibilities are endless when you are making it yourself.
For starters, you can use a traditional pizza crust. You can make it thin or pat it into a pan for pan pizza. Fold the toppings inside the crust before baking and you have a calzone.
You can also use english muffins or french bread for a base. Kids love having their own little pizzas.
When it comes to a sauce, you can use the traditional tomato sauce. Other options are garlic butter, Alfredo sauce, or even ranch dressing. For a Mexican inspired flavor, you could use salsa or refried beans.
Pepperoni is one of the most popular pizza toppings. If you are looking to cut the fat and calories, try the turkey version. It is so flavorful and healthier. You also might be able to find natural pepperoni that is not made with nitrates.
Most people don’t think of chicken as a topping for pizza, but it’s great.
Seafood is another choice.
Whenever I have leftover Italian sausage or Chorizo sausage links, I like to slice them up for my pizza.
For the vegetable toppings, anything goes as well. If you like it, stick it on there. You could try zucchini, fresh tomatoes, or avocados.
For cheese, don’t stop with mozzarella.
Try cheddar, provolone,Monterey Jack, or Parmesan. It doesn’t have to be shredded, just thinly sliced. Another good cheese is Ricotta which can be spooned over the pizza in teaspoons.
If you have fresh herbs, sprinkle some on top right before baking for just that little bit of extra special.
Making your own pizza doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself. Making it yourself means that you can get exactly what you want on your pizza.
