Nutritional evaluation of calf starters for crossbred calves

Summary:

Calves are not ruminants because their rumen is not functioning due to that this is under development. During this period they cannot be offered high fibre diet. According to their nutritional need and capacity to digest the specific feeds, a calf starter fotmulated using energy, protein and mineral supplements. hyblend/ rovimix  TM-10 are also added in a calf starter.

The calves are not ruminants because their rumen is not functioning due to that this is under development. During this period they cannot be offered high fibre diet. According to their nutritional need and capacity to digest the specific feeds, A calf starter is formulated which includes low fibre and nutritious ingradients. A calf starter has its role in calf nutrion from week 1 to week 12. Four types of calf starter with successful formulation are being discussed as under:

Calf Starter one:

The composition of calf starter is wheat/wheat flour 10 kg; maize 15 kg; wheat bran  25 kg; groundnut cake  25 kg; fish meal (jawla type)  5 kg; molasses  5 kg; soyaflakes  12 kg; mineral mixture  3 kg; hyblend/ rovimix  25 g and TM 10 300 g.

Evaluation of calf starter:

A calf weighing 19.48 kg body wt. at birth was attained 56.30 kg Body wt. At 90 days on this calf starter. The animal gained 36.82 kg Gain in body weight within a period of 90 days. The average daily gain remained 409 g/d. The saving with this milk replacer was Rs. 400/- per calf upto 90 days of age.

Calf starter two:

The composition of calf starter is maize 42 kg; wheat bran 20 kg; groundnut cake 20 kg; fish meal (jawla type) 7; kg soyaflakes 8; kg mineral mixture 3; kg hyblend/ rovimix 25 g and TM-10 300 g.

Calf starter three:

The composition of calf starter is wheat/wheat flour 30 kg; linseed cake 30 kg; maize 10 kg; wheat bran 10 kg; fish meal (jawla type) 7 kg; soyaflakes 10 kg; mineral mixture 3 kg; hyblend/ rovimix 25 g and TM-10 300 g.

The composition of calf starter is wheat/wheat flour 10 kg; groundnut cake 9 kg; fish meal (jawla type) 12 kg; molasses 10 kg; soyaflakes 10 kg; sesamum cake 10 kg; coconut oil 7 kg; linseed 14 kg; citric acid 3 kg; butyric acid 300 ml; mineral mixture 3 kg; hyblend/ rovimix 25 g and TM-10 300 g.

A calf weighing 21.50 kg body wt. at birth was attained 54.50 kg Body weight at 90 days on this calf starter. The animal gained 33.00 kg in its body weight within a period of 90 days. The average daily gain remained 367 g/d. The saving with this milk replacer was Rs. 400/- per calf upto 90 days of age.
