The Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the entrance to Port Douglas, a 50-minute drive from Cairns, Australia.
On over 8 acres of land, the Sanctuary allows visitors to experience the flora and fauna of three unique Australian environments in Far North Queensland.
The Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary
The Sanctuary is a leader in nature tourism and has been awarded the ‘Advanced Ecotourism’ Certificate. The goal of educating visitors with an upclose and personal experience is achieved by helping visitors understand and appreciate their environment. Through observation visitors learn to appreciate, and through appreciation comes conservation and preservation for future generations.
Three Unique Australian Ecosystems
The Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary consists of three unique ecosystems, Rainforest, Grassland and Wetland environments. The Rainforest environment leads you through different levels of lush tropical rainforest found largely in this region. Experience the parrots and pigeons in the canopies and below green tree frogs, fish, turtles and amphibians. This area is also home to the endangered Southern Cassowary.
The Wetlands ecosystem boardwalk talks you over waterways home to fruit bats, black-necked storks and other bird species. You will also come across Koalas in the trees above and some great photo opportunities!
The Grasslands is a mix of inland and coastal plains. This is one of the most popular environments for children who have the opportunity to hand feed Australian Grey Kangaroos and Parma wallabies with Kangaroo food. The Grasslands is also home to the endangered Lumboltz’s Tree Kangaroo a rare tree-climbing Kangaroo! The Grasslands billabong is home to turtles, frogs and native bird species and make sure you take notice of the lagoons, which estuarine and fresh water crocodiles inhabit.
Breakfast with the Birds
One of the most popular attractions that the park offers is having breakfast with the birds. A breakfast of BBQ bacon and eggs and a tropical buffet of exotic fruits, pastries, cereals, breads, tea, coffee and juices are available. Visitors dine in the heart of the Wetlands environment in an open air restaurant allowing the curious wildlife to wonder freely amongst the tables. Admission to the Sanctuary is included in the price of breakfast open 8-10am daily, costing $44 for Adults, $22 for Children and $110 for a Family.
Another dining option is Lunch with the Lorikeets at the same price operating from 12-2:30pm daily. Lunch consists of soup, fresh bread, BBQ steak, fish, pasta, fresh salads and tropical fruits, local and herbal teas and coffee, eaten amongst the lorikeets, curlews, parrots, herons and other birdlife in the area.
Visiting the Sanctuary
The Rainforest Habitat is open all year round except Christmas Day from 8am-5pm daily. Admission is $30 for Adults, $15 for Children (4-14 years) and $75 for a Family. Included in your admission price are free guided tours and animal presentations available throughout the day.
Operating at various times, experienced guides can take you on a Wetland, Rainforest or Grasslands tour. Koala, snake and crocodile presentations also give visitors the opportunity to touch and see the animals up close. A unique photo opportunity!
A popular option for tourists of the region is to hire a car to take the scenic coastal journey from Cairns to Port Douglas. If you do not have your own transport, there is a shuttle bus from Cairns or Port Douglas to the Sanctuary or you can book a Tropic Wings tour that includes return transportation to your accommodation, entry to the Rainforest Habitat and free time in Port Douglas village for lunch and shopping.
