How do they happen?

Solar Eclipses occur when the Sun and the Earth are aligned with the Moon between. The Moon can obscure part or all of the Suns rays to produce an event known as a Solar Eclipse.

There are three different types of Eclipse. These are known as partial, total and annular.

The most spectacular to see Is the total eclipse which occurs when the the moon exactly covers the suns surface(photosphere). The Moon casts a shadow on Earth, and within the dark central part of that shadow(umbra) an observer will witness a total eclipse. In the brighter part of the shadow(penumbra), the Moon hides only part of the solar surface. This Is how we get a partial eclipse. An annular eclipse happens when the Moon Is further away from the Earth. This makes the Moon appear slightly smaller than the Suns disk In the sky and therefore does not cover It completely.

Always remember when observing the solar eclipses to always use a protective filter. Observing the Suns rays directly will cause blindness.
