Spam in Inbox – how to avoid them?

Spam, is it possible to avoid them? Many of us have this question and almost majority of us are fed up with seeing spam messages in our Inbox daily. Have you ever thought that there is a way to stop all these junk e-mails from your Inbox? Why it is important to stop these junk e-mails? They spread malicious viruses and various cyber-crimes like identity theft, phishing, etc. Let me share some tips with you to avoid these spam messages.

1. Avoid previewing the messages: Many of the e-mail programs offer an option of previewing the e-mail messages. If you have enabled this option, it is wise to disable it. You might ask why this is important. Most of the spam messages contain code that will get activated as soon as you preview it. This may lead to virus attacks, spyware, etc. I know it is convenient to preview the message before actually opening it; however, to avoid spammers attacking your system, it is recommended to disable this option.

2. Avoid using HTML mode: I think all e-mail programs offer you two modes to view your e-mail messages, namely, HTML and plain text. We generally prefer reading them in HTML mode with all those flashy colors. Spammers too know these and they design their viruses to infect the system. Most of the times we never knew that a virus or a spyware is installed in our system at all. They gain access to all personal information of ours including credit card numbers, their passwords, passwords of various e-mail programs, etc. Spammers use JavaScript for embedding malicious viruses. When you shift to plain text mode, JavaScript is disabled and hence chances of your system getting infected by these malicious viruses are reduced greatly. Change the setting of viewing your messages from HTML to plain text.

3. Avoid falling bait to Phishers: Have you heard of phishing attack? What is this? Spam message that is designed to get private information is termed as phishing attack. You might sometimes get an e-mail claiming that it is from the bank where you have your account or from the credit card company asking you to reveal information like Social Security Number, password, bank account number, etc. Don’t ever fall bait for these kinds of e-mail messages. If you click the link that is provided in this e-mail, all your personal information is automatically sent to the server of the spammer. Call up your bank or Credit Card Company and verify whether they have sent such an e-mail before parting with your personal information.

4. Avoid responding to spam messages: You might see a variety of advertisements, banners and spam messages. Don’t ever click them or respond to spam messages. What happens when you reply to spam e-mail messages? Spammers will understand that this is real as well as a live e-mail address and starts sending more and more spam e-mail messages. At one point of time, they will embed malicious code into these messages and will entice you to click them thereby gaining access to your personal and financial information. Similarly, don’t ever click or respond to messages that are in the junk folder.

These tips will definitely help you in protecting your Inbox from spam messages. Try using anti-spam software in addition to following these tips.
