Stargate SG-1’s first season show Fire and Water is a must see, an hour long program that is one of the best of the entire series. It begins with Jack, Sam, and Teal’c returning from a mission with the claim that Daniel is dead. This is the second time we get the ‘Daniel is dead’ thing, the first being the intentional lie Jack told after the first visit to Abydos. Some people count that; others don’t.
The most highly memorable scene is the reverent and dramatic memorial service for Daniel. I love the folding of the American flag and the wreath which is sent through the Stargate. Jack’s speech is great, too, although there is an original version that I like even better. It just didn’t make the final cut of the episode. However, Jack’s calling Daniel his friend and the heart and soul of the SGC is just awesome.
Moments I especially love include the team at Daniel’s apartment, the wake, and when Daniel bangs his head against the wall in his underwater prison.
The funniest moment is the end when Richard Dean Anderson as Jack does a sushi ad lib. Michael Shanks’ Daniel is staring at him in disbelief. It worked really well, and you can see on Anderson’s face how pleased he is with himself.
It’s one of the best!
