The Spanish Conquest of The Aztecs

In 1486 to 1502, the Aztec empire reached it’s height during the reign of Ahuitzotl.Moctuzuma II the successor of Ahuitzotl’s had been Hueyi Tlatoani for 17 years. In the spring of 1519, the Spaniards headen by Hernado Cortes landed in the Gulf Coast.

Hernando Cortes allied the long time enemy of the Aztecs, the Tlaxcala. On Novenber 8, 1519 he arrived in the gates of Tenochtitlan. 

The merging of the Spaniards and the Tlaxcallan became dangerous. Hostilities broke out in June, 1520, it culminates the massacre in the main temple and the death of Montezuma II

The Spaniards together with thier allies fles the town on July 1 and returned in the spring of 1521 to seige Tenochtitlan. The battle ended on August 13 and the city of Tenochtitlan was destroyed.

After the death of Moctezuma II, the empire went through a rapid succession of rulers. The empire was governed by weakened emperors, such as Cuitlahuac. Finally, it was being ruled by the puppet ruler put by the Spanish.

Most of the Mesoamerican cultures were still intact after the fall of Tenochtitlan despite the decline of the Aztec empire. Other Mesoamerican culture considered the freedom from Aztec domination as one of the development that was eventually happened.

The Spaniards treated and considered the upper class of the Aztecs empire as noblemen. The Spanish allies, the Tlaxcalans were remained loyal to the spanish. They were allowed to participate on the other conquest with Hernado Cortes and the rest of the Spanish troops.
