One of the less popular herbs is leeks. Leek is a herb that belongs to the same family as onions. A lot of people mistake it for onions because they look alike. This plant which is sometimes referred to as a poor man’s asparagus has a lot of features which differentiates it from onions. Its parts have various uses as well as health benefits.
Although leeks and onions looks the same a lot, there are certain features which can help us to identify one from the other. Leeks have thicker stalks when compared to onions. It also has a sweeter and milder pungency. Another physical feature that differentiates them are their bulbs. Onions has a more defined bulb compared to leeks.
Generally, leeks can be eaten in different ways. It can be used in soups like vichyssoise. It can also be eaten raw. It is used in salads, added in crudités and can also be eaten with a dip.
The different parts of leeks can be eaten or used in cooking. The part of the plant which is exposed to air is tough and hard to eat. However the white part which is under the solid is tender and easier to eat. The tough parts of this plant are still edible though. It is usually sliced and frozen first. Then it can be used in cooking to add flavor to soups, stews, grilled and sautéed meats.
Leeks have various health benefits from the vitamins and minerals which it contains. This plant is a great source for Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, iron, manganese, potassium and fiber.
