There are many ways to ensure that you get a better night’s sleep, different things work for different people so you really just have to try a few and see what works for you. Sweet dreams!
Unwind – Before you go to bed start to relax. If you have been rushing around then try to go straight to bed your mind will still be too active to relax and fall asleep so try to stop and spend sometime doing what you enjoy whether that be watching television or just sitting quietly for at least half an hour before you try to go to sleep.
Comfortable bed – You should replace your mattress at least every 10 years. A mattress that is too soft or too hard can mean that you are not comfortable and will find it difficult to get asleep or you will have a disturbed night. If this is the case a trip to your local bed shop might be in order. Here they can assess exactly what kind of a mattress suits you, some people have mattresses that are too firm or too soft both of which are bad for your back and can give you a disturbed nights sleep.
Heating – Don’t have your radiators on full in your bedroom, if your room is too hot you wont get a good nights sleep as you will be overheating. Its better to add an extra blanket on top rather than switch the heating up.
Read a Book – Reading a book before you go to bed helps your mind switch off from the days activities and relaxes you and will make you feel sleepy. Try not to read a really scary book as this might have the opposite effect.
Warm Drink – Drinking a warm drink before bedtime might also help make you feel sleepy and get a good nights rest.
Heavy meal – Don’t eat a big heavy meal before going to bed as you are unlikely to get a good nights rest and instead will be feeling very full and bloated as the food will not have had time to digest.
Darkened Room – Is your bedroom dark enough. A darkened room helps you sleep and avoids you being woken up too early in the morning, use lined curtains or a blackout blind or you could even use an eye-mask to ensure you aren’t woken by the morning sun.
Gentle music – Soothing music played before you go to bed will help you unwind and start to feel relaxed and sleepy.
Bath – A warm bath helps your muscles relax and also soothes your mind and takes away your worries ensuring you get a better nights sleep.
Get Things done – All too often we don’t get a good nights sleep because we are worrying about what we havent got done or what we still have to do. Try and get things done before you go to bed. Keep a notepad at the side of your bed, if you forget anything you can jot it down and be happy that you wont forget tomorrow. That way you can relax, empty your mind and get off to sleep.
Try a few of these ideas and you should be guaranteed a better night’s sleep and will feel much better for it in the morning.
