Why is My Tongue White

Oral thrush is most common in babies but, can also occur in adults of any age. Oral thrush is a result of too much of the fungus Candida. Candida is the cause of yeast infections. Candida over growth on the tongue can cause a white appearance which is normally painless. This is often caused by a weakened immune system. Other causes of thrush can be anti biotics, corti steroid use and birth control pills.

The most common treatments for oral thrush is Nystatin, fluconazole and Clotrimazole Torches which can be prescribed by your doctor. Some folks will get a white tongue for no reason at all and this build up can be removed from brushing your tongue with a toothbrush. A white tongue can also be a build up from the foods that you eat and will also give you bad breath. Drinking milk will sometimes coat the tongue white. Taking certain medications such as Maalox will coat the tongue white. White tongue can be unsightly and a personal annoyance. A white tongue should always be checked out by your physician. If your white tongue is due to oral thrush you will want to get this treated as soon as possible.
