The flu virus, also known as Influenza, is a kind of respiratory infection. It attacks the respiratory tract in humans and can be transmitted easily as the disease can be transmitted via the air we breathe. For example when an infected person coughs or sneezes near you without covering their mouth or nose. When the flu virus enters your nose, throat, or lungs, the virus will start to multiply which in turn causes symptoms of the flu.
Do not be confused with symptoms of the common cold as flu symptoms are usually more severe compared to it. In the worst cases of flu, the disease can be deadly to some people who and it can be further developed into life-threatening complications like pneumonia.
Signs & symptoms:
Flu symptoms usually come suddenly which can cause sore throat, high fever, headaches, coughing, running nose and even muscle aches. Other symptoms may include fatigue, loss of appetite, weakness, chills, sneezing, nasal discharge and stomach discomfort.
A person who gets the flu virus may have different reactions to the illness. There are people who are at high risks of developing complications which can lead to death. Babies, young children and the elderly usually have weaker immune system, thus they will be much more susceptible to the flu virus. People with heart and lung diseases need to be extra careful as they are more than likely to be developing serious complications due to an infection of the flu virus.
Treatment and prevention:
Consult your doctor for medical help. There are anti flu medications that are readily available in the pharmacies to treat flu. Please take note that anti flu medications are not a substitute for flu vaccination. Getting a flu vaccine once per year is still the best defence you can get to protect yourself from the flu virus.
You should avoid strenuous physical activities like lifting and jogging until you have a complete recovery. You are advised to stay at home and not go to school or work to minimise the transmission of the infection to others. Always try and remember to wear a flu mask if possible so as to prevent spreading the infection to others.
To lower your chances of flu affecting you, start to lead a healthy lifestyle and eat a balanced diet. Exercise regularly and have ample rest and sleep. Wash your hands with soap frequently as you might have come in contact with objects that are exposed to germs.
